Drawing from classical literature and dramatic narrative structures, Xu searches for abstract traces within the real world, using them to deconstruct and reconstruct human figures. The resulting images are populated by figures in states of physical distortion and psychological intensity—strange and uncanny forms that defy conventional pictorial logic and challenge the viewer’s perceptual framework. These bodies become vessels of emotion and manifestations of interior life, placed within ambiguous environments that oscillate between the abstract and the concrete. Within these spaces, they enact an endless, absurd, and timeless drama.
Through this body of work, Xu Xinwu seeks to probe the intricate dynamics between individuals and their environments, illuminating the multiplicity of human destiny, emotion, and existence. The Human Comedy captures the elusive spiritual traces embedded deep within lived experience, offering a vision of an alternative, and profoundly resonant, realism.
